You will be able to:
Identify ways we can support loved ones after experiences of sexual violence
Analyze the impact of sexual violence on the mental health and lives of characters in the films
Formulate concrete ways other characters can support protagonists in their recovery after sexual violence, using provided resources
Generate ideas for preventing sexual violence on campus and for supporting survivors
"Supporting Survivors of Sexual Violence" examines the experiences of survivors and their paths toward healing. Participants will begin by reading and reflecting on ways to support loved ones after sexual violence, using this knowledge to better understand the perspectives of the films' protagonists. The first film, a drama, follows a woman as she seeks support in the aftermath of sexual violence. The second, a poetry and dance film, explores a survivor’s conflicting emotions of fear and desire around intimacy. After each screening, guided reflection will help participants explore ways to support survivors. The session concludes with a discussion on how the campus community can work to prevent sexual violence and foster a supportive environment.
Note: This class includes supplementary materials that can be completed at the start of class or assigned as homework. If assigned as homework, the class duration may be approximately 15 minutes shorter.
