Participants will be able to:
Draw conclusions about protagonists and demonstrate empathy through reflection and discussion
Create interpretations and connections between the films and their own experiences, thoughts, and feelings
Evaluate their own relationships with substances
Design a plan for supporting themselves
"Building Awareness About Substance Use and Recovery" gives participants an opportunity to learn about these topics by watching two films that each feature a different story about a person living with them. Students are invited to read and reflect on an overview of Substance Use Disorder, as well as treatment information and ways to support loved ones, in addition to a reading on the guiding principles of recovery. They'll use that knowledge to help them understand the perspectives of the films' protagonists. They will consider each protagonists's experience through reflection and discussion, exploring how they navigate substance use and their own recovery. To finish, they'll explore their own relationship with substances and design concrete steps to support themselves.
Note: This class includes supplementary materials that can be completed at the start of class or assigned as homework. If assigned as homework, the class duration may be approximately 20 minutes shorter.
