Draw conclusions about protagonists and demonstrate empathy through reflection and discussion
"Not Man Enough" invites students to analyze the impact of stereotypical definitions of masculinity on protagonists in two short dramas. In the first film, a young man pushes himself beyond healthy limits to reach a goal. Students are asked to consider his goals and the influences others have on them. In the second, a bereaved partner reflects on his internalized homophobia. Students discuss what messages the character may have internalized, and why these are so hard to overcome. Students are asked to name and discuss the qualities of men they most respect and why they appreciate them.
Note: This class includes supplementary materials that can be completed at the start of class or assigned as homework. If assigned as homework, the class duration may be approximately 15 minutes shorter.
