    Participants will be able to:

    • Brainstorm examples of situations that can be new to us and their associated feelings

    • Draw conclusions about protagonists and demonstrate empathy through reflection and discussion

    • Compare the benefits of and challenges in connecting with others in new situations

    • Describe concrete steps to connect with and show appreciation for others in our own lives

"Creating Connection" offers students space to think about creating connections with others in new environments. After considering their own experience in new situations, students will watch "Esther and Sai," which follows the first day of two international students on their first day of nursing school in the 1970's. Using the film protagonists' stories to guide the discussion, students will consider what can make it seem like we don't belong, as well as the resulting emotions from those experiences. The class concludes with an opportunity to brainstorm the benefits of connections with others, and an invitation to identify people in our own lives to whom we could reach out.

Note: This class has an optional Supplemental Resource that can allow for more time spent learning about the science behind friendship and health. Please plan to add at least 15 minutes to the class time if you plan to incorporate this Resource.
