About AOM's Powerful Mental Health Topics Filter

    ~3m

The Mental Health Topics filter helps you find Classes that explore specific issues—from clinical diagnoses to everyday emotional challenges. It’s a great place to start if you already know what kind of conversation you want to spark, or if you're aligning your Class with a wellness initiative, awareness month, or curriculum topic.

    What the Filter Includes

You’ll find a broad range of topics, including:

    • Diagnoses and clinical experiences (e.g., anxiety, depression, trauma, eating disorders, psychosis)
    • Cultural and identity-based experiences (e.g., intergenerational trauma, body image, masculinity and mental health, racial trauma, perfectionism)
    • Social and emotional realities(e.g., loneliness, grief, burnout, help-seeking)

Why We Include Both Diagnoses and Cultural Experiences

Mental health doesn’t exist in a vacuum. While clinical diagnoses are important, people’s experiences of mental health are shaped by a lot of things, including their biology, culture, relationships, and environment.
By including both types of topics, the filter allows you to:

    • Support educational goals around specific conditions or symptoms
    • Acknowledge the real-world complexity of mental health
    • Choose Classes that reflect the intersections of identity and mental health
    • Spark discussions that are emotionally resonant, not just informational. For example, a Class on anxiety may feature characters dealing with both diagnosis and cultural stigma.

How to Use the Filter Effectively

    • Start with one or two key topics. (E.g., if you’re leading a session for student-athletes, try “physical health”)
    • Combine it with other filters like Class Type or Identities to narrow your search (E.g., Supporting our Own Mental Health and Athletes)
    • Preview the Class to confirm that the tone, film, and activities fit your group’s needs.

    Tips & Notes

    • You can use this filter to align with campus events like Mental Health Awareness Week, Black History Month, or LGBTQ+ Wellness initiatives.
    • Some Classes address more than one topic—feel free to browse widely, then preview before choosing.
