Scripts to Help You Respond to Personal Disclosures in a Class

    ~2m

Sometimes a Participant may share more personal information than is appropriate or safe in a group Educational Space. As the Instructor, you can respond with care while also protecting group boundaries. Here are a few scripts to help you navigate those moments with confidence and compassion.

If someone begins to share something very personal or intense:

“Thank you for trusting this space. I want to pause you there, just to make sure we’re keeping this a safe space for everyone—including you.”
Why it works: It acknowledges their bravery while gently redirecting.

If the disclosure becomes very detailed or emotionally heavy:

“I can hear that this is something really important to you. Let’s connect after class so we can make sure you get the right support.”
Why it works: It creates a private follow-up opportunity and reinforces care.

If the group feels tense or unsure how to respond:

“Let’s take a moment to pause and breathe. One of the goals of this space is to share in ways that feel supportive to ourselves and to others, and that sometimes means not going too deep into personal stories in this setting.”
Why it works: It resets the group energy and reinforces boundaries.

To follow up one-on-one after class:

“I really appreciate what you shared today. I also want to make sure you’re okay and have support outside of this group—can I help connect you with someone on campus or in your community?”
Why it works: It shows continued care and helps connect them to longer-term support.

    Tips & Notes

    • You’re not expected to be a counselor—your role is to keep the space emotionally safe and grounded.
    • Use a calm, warm tone. Your steadiness can help reassure the group.
    • Remember: it’s okay to gently interrupt or redirect. Boundaries are part of care.
